Hi there folks.

What’s all this about?

For some time now the domain MyBB.com has been owned by another party and not used (also known as domain parking). Numerous attempts have been made to purchase the domain for the MyBB project, but the price has always been too far out of our reach.

It is not uncommon for 4 letter domains to be sold for upwards of $10,000 – in fact, when first approached, we were told they wanted $20,000 for MyBB.com. Thanks to labrocca, we now have a price that is much more feasible for us to obtain. A special deal is open just to the MyBB Group to get this domain, but the offer is not open indefinitely.

We need to raise $3,000 to secure the domain.

Why do we want this?

We’re glad you asked.

The MyBB.com domain will be beneficial to reach a larger audience who will see us as a striving project in need of recognition as the very competitive forum solution that we are.

MyBB.com is less effort to type in, and remember, than MyBBoard.net – which can be confusing. Is it MyBBoard or MyBBBoard? If it’s MyBBoard, is the software called MyB Board, or MyB?

When you try to recall a website’s domain, one of the hardest parts is the name and spelling, the next hardest is if it’s .com, .net, .org, etc. Most times we’ll try .com first – if we get the domain, you’d get us first try!

What have you done for me?

Over the years we have provided you with a forum solution that you’ve used for your hobbies, entertainment, leisure, business or maybe even a MyBB resource forum – whatever the case, we’ve been there with you every step of the way.

Where do we start?

Our staff members, labrocca and a few forum members have already expressed interest in donating an amount for the domain. Many thanks to Labrocca and Chris Boulton for already pledging $1,000 each, which brings down the donation goal to $3,000 but we’ll still be quite a bit off. Without our staff and valued members we would not be where we are today, and without you, we cannot advance into a new era. We’re counting on your donations to reach this goal.

Please consider how much you are able to donate towards our target, and if not, you can still assist us by spreading the word to your community or perhaps other MyBB users who may not know. Anything you can do will help us, and we are thankful for everything.

  2. I don’t understand the reason why it’s worth spending 3000$ for a domain name!?
    Maybe it sounds nicer, or it is easier to keep in mind, but many of the newcomers find you via google or another website.
    And then the site is bookmarked by them.

    So when I type MyBB in google first hit is mybboard.net. So where is the problem?

  3. @Alax Smith – The donation will run until we hit 3,000$ or more. You don’t need to worry about a time limit 🙂 We’ll be able to handle all the financials.

    @Abbadon, It’s for vanity and for all the reasons we listed above. How many people do you think go to mybb.com at first go and don’t come or think to search? You’d be surprised.

    Hi Folks,

    having a hint in signatures won’t be a big help. You need to do more (efficient things):

    1. Make a PayPal Donation Button that people can place on their sites.
    2. Make a hashtag for Twitter and encourage them to twitter the info
    3. Create a GIF Banner that points to your donation info page, and provide an HTML snippet, in order to place it on as many websites as possible

    While signatures may be only one method of helping, there are certainly other ways you can spread the word. As you can see, we have a donate button on the donate page and a banner on our main page which you are free to use on your own website. We will also be twittering about this soon enough.

  7. @Masa: I think there will be an opportunity to help in your own forum or on your homepage to us. Currently, you can instead use the same button as for the signature, but I think there is something else specific.

  11. Completely useless thing. Better spend the money to MyBB development. It would bring bigger more users than shorter domain. In other case you can’t count on me. Sorry guys. 😦

  12. @marines: We currently do not put any money into developing MyBB, as far as I am aware.

    We believe this is something we need to achieve a higher level of success, however, we are not asking that everyone agree with us or that you must donate. A donation is a donation, if you believe in the cause then you may donate, if not that’s fine. Sincerely. 🙂

    I could be wrong, but I think we’re coming up with a progress bar that updates automatically (if not already) but I’m not sure about how much is still needed being implemented.

  20. I want to donate 50 dollars, but disposable Visa cards do not work via paypal. If i give the info, can someone spend the money on domains (Or something) and donate 50 dollars in my name?

  26. Donated $5 personally, and looking to do more from my company next month. I love the thought of being able to visit MyBB.com, and since I buy and sell domains every day I know it’s really a steal at that price. Good luck guys.

  29. As a “domainer”, and someone who has dealt with BuyDomains in the past – this is ridiculous. A “special deal” to an open source project = $5k? Yeah, right. Who knows how much they’ve made while having the domain parked, now they want an additional $5k on top of that.

    Personally I wouldn’t give a dime to BuyDomains, ever. That’s why I, unfortunately, will not donate.

    The right thing for BuyDomains to do, would be to donate the domain for no cost.

  30. @E., Unfortunately that’s not how it works in a capitalist society (or basically anywhere with an economy). As stated before, a premium domain like this would normally go for between $10,000-20,000+. 5K is a pretty good deal.

  32. I’m just under $50 in my PayPal balance right now so I’ll wait until I can get an even $50 to donate. It’s a great project and it deserves a domain that reflects that.

  34. $3k?? I am a domainer and either way this is a steal for that domain. You are actually quite fortunate that BuyDomains has it. A private party would never give you such a low price for that domain. BD will probably even feature your story once the domain is acquired. MyBB.com is a great domain and an essential purchase. A literal no-brainer. People who think otherwise are misinformed. Congrats on arranging this.

I do not use mybb to be honest – it just doesn’t suit my websites needs (I apologize for that) however I will be making a donation when my pay goes in towards this cause due to the fact that having mybb as the domain name will grow the userbase of mybb and in turn encourage the developers to work longer and harder on their product.

  40. @Leon, if the donation wasn’t through the “Donation Drive” page on the website, then it wasn’t set aside for the domain. Those donations will go towards paying server costs, etc.

  46. Is there an option to make a anonymous. donation? I am not one to want Kudos for something I love and support, so would want to go anonymous or a different user name that is not affiliated if necessary. Also how long is this offer on the table?

  47. If you want your donation to be anonymous simply do not enter your forum username where prompted.

    Also we don’t have an exact time frame, but something in the area of “as soon as we can” would be our aim I’d say. 🙂

I do have a .info domain however and as far as a search engine optimization stand point I have been told by Google that they rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com .org .net .ca ,au .uk …etc websites. Therefore, for SEO reasons it does not matter which Domain you own. If you don’t believe me, email Google yourself!

    So guys do you really want to fork out that heavy amount of money when you can use it right now on futur projects as we speak and useful things that we reallyyyy need!
