PHP 5.1.0 minimum

As we have alluded in the past couple of years, MyBB 1.6 will be the first version of MyBB to run on PHP 5 installations only, and more specifically, servers set up with PHP 5.1.0 as a minimum. This is only an issue for about 10% of you who are still using a host running obsolete versions of PHP; it might be time to give your host a slight nudge forward if you are in this group.

Thanks for reading!

There are even more features that will make your MyBB experience even better. Stay tuned to find out more about MyBB 1.6!

  3. Looks great! Glad to see you went with PHP 5.1 as a minimum vs PHP 5.2 like other projects have been doing. This allows those RH EL and CentOS uses to keep the official PHP 5.1.6 package.

  4. @StefanT: I just tested it on my localhost. Looks pretty stable to me. I just don’t get why its a major release as much hasn’t changed except 49 features.

  5. @Ryan Gordon: That could of been a content update myBB 1.4.12…. I mean if the User Profile was changed or the theme was Web 2.0 it would sure be major release. In the release of 1.2 -> 1.4 you changed the ACP. Here nothing has been except a high load of bug fixes and features.

  6. WOAH!! Finally, something about 1.6. Thanks! Now I will actually read this, as I skipped everything to the comments.

  7. @bukka3: A theme/look change is not the only thing that determines a major version change. It is other things.
Generally speaking, we do not add many features in minor releases unless it fixes a bug or is something we can add without causing issues.

Additionally, 1.6 may require plugin and theme modifications for you to enjoy all of the new features we’ve added. If it were a minor update, people may not even know what they’re upgrading to and may miss out.

  8. I have MyBB 1.4.11 right now. I have made light (but tedious to redo) modifications to some template files and such. If I upgrade to MyBB 1.6, what will be lost, if anything?

  9. @Marc Templates aren’t stored in files, and if I remember correctly the upgrade script will not touch any edits you have made, however you would need to see if you need to make any changes to make them 1.6 compatible, i.e. make sure you’re not missing code that shows new features or is necessary for them to work etc.

  10. I hope it will be compatible with 1.4.x themes & plugins and that you will continue to support 1.4.x for some time, I really hate upgrading…

  11. I forgot to ask in my other post. Will this break a lot of plugins? I know some will need updated and what not but I was just wondering if there was a good bit of code changes that will affect plugins.

  12. Wow! I’m drooling just by looking at the screenshots! I can’t wait until the beta is released πŸ™‚
