MyBB 1.6 Beta Released

The MyBB Group is proud to release the first public beta of MyBB 1.6.  There are over 48 new features some of which we have featured in two of our previous blog postings (sneak previews: part 1, part 2).  In addition, there are a number of improvements and bug fixes.

MyBB 1.6 aims to provide a number of fresh new features to the 1.4.x code base.  We had backward compatibility in mind, and so most themes and modifications designed for 1.4.x should work with 1.6 with minimal changes.

Beta software

As this is still beta software, we expect there are going to be bugs, anomalies and other related issues.  Please report any bugs in our development tracker, with all the information you may find relevant (error verbatim, reproduction procedure, server software, browser, etc), and please search before posting.  At this time we do not recommend running this on a production forum.  It is highly recommended that you create backups of your files and database before attempting to use MyBB 1.6.

Support

The support team will be providing limited official support for the beta software. Our concentration for support will still be on our stable series, 1.4.x, so please be patient.  As usual, we can only provide support for assistance in using MyBB’s features.  We cannot provide support for customizations including plugins, modifications, and themes.

Donation drive for a domain: MyBB.com

MyBB.com Donation Drive

Hi there folks.

What’s all this about?

For some time now the domain MyBB.com has been owned by another party and not used (also known as domain parking). Numerous attempts have been made to purchase the domain for the MyBB project, but the price has always been too far out of our reach.

It is not uncommon for 4 letter domains to be sold for upwards of $10,000 – in fact, when first approached, we were told they wanted $20,000 for MyBB.com. Thanks to labrocca, we now have a price that is much more feasible for us to obtain. A special deal is open just to the MyBB Group to get this domain, but the offer is not open indefinitely.

We need to raise $3,000 to secure the domain.

Why do we want this?

We’re glad you asked.

The MyBB.com domain will be beneficial to reach a larger audience who will see us as a striving project in need of recognition as the very competitive forum solution that we are.

MyBB.com is less effort to type in, and remember, than MyBBoard.net – which can be confusing. Is it MyBBoard or MyBBBoard? If it’s MyBBoard, is the software called MyB Board, or MyB?

When you try to recall a website’s domain, one of the hardest parts is the name and spelling, the next hardest is if it’s .com, .net, .org, etc. Most times we’ll try .com first – if we get the domain, you’d get us first try!

What have you done for me?

Over the years we have provided you with a forum solution that you’ve used for your hobbies, entertainment, leisure, business or maybe even a MyBB resource forum – whatever the case, we’ve been there with you every step of the way.

Where do we start?

Our staff members, labrocca and a few forum members have already expressed interest in donating an amount for the domain. Many thanks to Labrocca and Chris Boulton for already pledging $1,000 each, which brings down the donation goal to $3,000 but we’ll still be quite a bit off. Without our staff and valued members we would not be where we are today, and without you, we cannot advance into a new era. We’re counting on your donations to reach this goal.

Please consider how much you are able to donate towards our target, and if not, you can still assist us by spreading the word to your community or perhaps other MyBB users who may not know. Anything you can do will help us, and we are thankful for everything.

I’ve heard enough, I’m ready to get involved

We have setup a page on our website for the donation drive at our donation drive page. You may find all the information you need to donate there.

If you would like to spread the word we have created an image you may place in your signature that will show the progress of the donation drive. Just place this into your signature:

[url=http://mybboard.net/donation-drive/][img]http://mybboard.net/assets/images/donation_drive_sig.png[/img][/url]

If you would also like to put it into your website, here is the HTML code:

<div align="center"><a href="http://mybboard.net/donation-drive/"><img src="http://mybboard.net/assets/images/donation_drive_sig.png" alt="" /></a></div>

Thank you all in advance,
MyBB Group.

Important Update: April 16, 2010

If you applied the MyBB 1.4.12 update before April 16, 2010 7:00 UTC we recommend you redownload the changed file package and reupdate the inc/functions.php file to your forum. The change fixes an issue identified in the previous hot patch relating to the random number generator. We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience caused by this.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Matt Rogowski answers your questions

The MyBB member with the highest post count, and most well known for his abundant amount of support and knowledge, Matt Rogowski, took some time out to answer your questions.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m 18 and live in rural Norfolk in England, UK. I don’t speak like half the people up here (which is just as well as a lot of them are very hard to understand!!) as I used to live in Essex. The sort of music I like is Jimmy Eat World, Ash, Paramore, that sort of thing, and I like to watch shows like Lost, Heroes, Flash Forward, Scrubs, Top Gear, CSI and motorsport on TV. I went to college (that’s not the same as what college is across the pond, college here is when you’re 16-18, then after that you have university, 18-23+) but didn’t do too well so I got a job instead of continuing with education. I got a job working for a company that provides software/hardware primarily for use by the NHS. I work with PHP/MySQL which is helping to improve my skills. It’s a different working environment to most other jobs as we’re a few miles from any main roads or built up areas, so it’s dead quiet and an amazing place to work, plus the other people there are great.

Why made you so passionate about MyBB?

I’d had a little bit of experience with forums before, I’d been a regular poster on some for a few years, and eventually I decided to have a go at making one myself and signed up to some of the free hosting services where you get a subdomain address, but they never went very far. I talked to the admin of one of the forums I went on, which was running MyBB 1.2 at the time, and he offered me free hosting, and I started using MyBB then. I didn’t have FTP access to begin with so I changed to a normal host, but the forum didn’t get anywhere, and I ended up removing it. However I already knew I liked MyBB a lot so started posting on the community forums, started to like it even more, began to help people with issues they were having and got better at that as time went on, and here we are today. I really liked finding something I’m good at and that helps others, and I hope I can only do more in the future. I think what the MyBB team, past and present, has achieved is brilliant, I’m very happy to be a part of it, and I cannot wait for 2.0.

What is your favourite gadget and why?

I love gadgets, I’m the person in my house who’s called for to help someone with whatever piece of gadgetry they’re having trouble with, and I have loads of them in various places in my room, but my favourite is my iPod Touch. I only have a 1st Gen one but it does me, I can have videos, loads of apps and all my music, plus internet and email, so I’ve always got something to do on it. There’s been many times I’ve charged it over night and by the evening the battery is well into the red zone. I’d like to get an iPhone or something but the prices are just too high; it’s (slightly more) affordable if it’s on contract but I’ve never liked the idea of that, and to buy it by itself and pay-as-you-go is £440 ($720) for a 16GB model, same as my iPod, and I can’t justify that expense for what I’d use it for. A more reasonable upgrade might be to get the next iPod Touch when they include a camera and/or 3G, which could happen. An iPhone would be good as everything I already have would be able to be ported across, and I’d already know how to use it. I quite like the look of an Android phone too, especially the newly announced Google Nexus One, however I rarely actually make calls with my phone so it’s probably not worth it, I’d just be getting it for the sake of having the latest gadget. I don’t really use my PlayStation much any more, racing games are the only thing I’m any good at but they wear thin after a while, unless I manage to hook it up to the net and play online, although with my internet connection I can’t see that happening any time soon!! I’ll probably be getting a MacBook soon and I’m sure that’ll become my favourite gadget. I also seem to love USB sticks, but don’t ask why, as I have no idea. I hardly ever read instruction manuals, only if I get some sort of critical error using something and think it’s probably best to read it.

What are some of your pet hates?

People driving with their fog lights on, be it when it’s broad daylight or dark, but when there’s no fog. I don’t think they understand they can be quite blinding, they are designed to help you see in fog after all. Similarly, I don’t like people who take ages to turn their beam off despite the fact you’re flashing at them. I also hate it when ppl tlk lyk ths nd use numbrs like ‘I wnt 2 do dis m8’.

If you could have any feature you wanted implemented into MyBB by default, what would it be?

A WYSIWYG editor. Not. I would love to see an official integration with WordPress; not a feature as such but I can’t really think of any big features that are missing. I think linking a forum and blog is good but I don’t think we should waste time writing our own blog when, realistically, WordPress is going to be a whole lot better and already has a large user base with lots of plugins and themes, and we don’t have to spend time writing, testing, and maintaining it, when we should be writing, testing and maintaining what MyBB actually is, an awesome forum system. I hope we don’t go down the social route with profile comments and personal photo galleries etc; if people want their users to be able to make their own blog, it would be better to hook it up with WordPress MU, making use of WordPress again, but I think that would be enough. Don’t redesign the wheel, integrate with what’s already available.

What is your dream career?

When I was growing up I had the sorts of dream jobs everyone wanted to have, footballer, racing driver, astronaut, but none of those are realistic for most of us. I then went through a stage of wanting to do a trade, such as being a plumber or electrician, more realistic. However I then started getting into a bit of web design etc, and then joined MyBB. Now I want to end up being a professional programmer, and although I’m still new to it, I think that can easily happen. It sort of already has with me getting a job working with PHP/MySQL, which is going really well, and the more I do the better I’m getting. One of my aims for MyBB is to code something that goes into 2.0, no matter how small, and I really hope that happens. One thing I really need to learn is all the MyBB functions, as well as OOP. Right now OOP makes no sense to me, but then again a few months ago all the PHP I know well made the same amount of sense as OOP does now so maybe in a while I’ll crack it.

The person/people in the world I’d most like to meet is…

Jeremy Clarkson and James May. I’ve been a few feet away from Clarkson but haven’t ‘met’ him as such. I also think it would be quite funny to meet Boris Johnson. I’d quite like to meet Jimmy Eat World and Paramore too actually.

Show us your (real) desktop!

A

Nothing special, haven’t got enough room for another monitor, may need to reorganise some stuff. Hardly use my printer so I’m sure that can more somewhere and I can get another monitor in.

Other than MyBB, what are some of your hobbies?

I don’t have time to do anything during the week really, too tired after work, so I only really have the weekends. I’m not very sporty, I only really did sport as school because I had to. I used to do quite a lot of cycling if that counts as a sport though, I had to cycle two miles to and from school every day for 3 years which kept me relatively fit, but now that I have a car I drive everywhere, and have outgrown my bike; it was fine when I was 5’6″ but now that I’m around 6’4″ it gets a bit hard to use. I guess my biggest hobby, if you can call it a hobby, is driving. I have a 1987 BMW which I love, it drives great (and sounds great as there’s a hole in the exhaust somewhere, hehe), and I love driving about in it, especially around all the great country roads we have here. I wanted something a bit different to what people usually get as a first car, and as my dad had the same model I do, just the next engine size up, new from 1985, it was the best choice.

What superpower would you have if you were a superhero?

Super vision. Thermal imaging/infra-red/night vision, heat vision, x-ray vision, the ability to zoom in to something miles away and see it clearly… I think that would be awesome.

Anything else you would like to add?

You can find me on my small site, Twitter and Facebook. If you add me on Twitter, @ reply me with your MyBB username, and if you add me on Facebook, leave a message on the add friend page, just so I know who you are. 🙂

PHP 5.1.0 minimum

As we have alluded in the past couple of years, MyBB 1.6 will be the first version of MyBB to run on PHP 5 installations only, and more specifically, servers set up with PHP 5.1.0 as a minimum. This is only an issue for about 10% of you who are still using a host running obsolete versions of PHP; it might be time to give your host a slight nudge forward if you are in this group.

MyBB 1.4.11 Released – Minor Patch & Security Update

MyBB 1.4.11 is now available on the MyBB website and is a minor patch update to 1.4.10.

This release is to ensure that all users on 1.4.10 have the latest patches, to fix a small and rare bug that with malicious intent can be used to assist a Denial-of-Service attack, and to patch a low security issue that can allow a user to check for file existence outside of the web root.

Thank you to Labrocca and Secunia (through a third party) for alerting us of these issues.

What’s fixed in this version?

This release has been tested by our Software Quality Assurance group.

This update does not require running the upgrader.
There are no database schema, language string, or template changes in this version.

Tochjo answers your questions

Tom Huls, a true MyBB veteran, answers your interview questions.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Tom, as you might have guessed from the cute avatar I have been using for quite some time now. I’m 22 years old, from the Netherlands and a fifth year maths student. My MyBB experience started when I began using Messenger Plus!, which I must have been sixteen or something back then. For some reason I felt the need to post on the forum there, which was powered by a very early version of MyBB. After some time I made some comments about the bulletin board software and that’s how I ended up here.

Other than MyBB, what are some of your hobbies?

This question gets asked regularly by other people and usually I reply by saying that I enjoy reading and walking. However, the number of unread books on my shelf keeps growing and I hardly get out. That’s mostly because studying takes up quite a bit of my time, but I intend to shift the balance a bit in the next few months. In any case, solving maths riddles is not on the list 😉

Being one of the more reserved MyBB team members, what are some of your duties regarding MyBB?

Basically, I am in charge of all that relates to internationalization and managing the translations. That includes uploading new translations when they’re finished, assisting translators in their joband also keeping the Dutch translation up-to-date, which I’m the author of. Apart from that, I do some basic stuff as changing usernames and giving support, although unfortunately I often find myself short of time so I have not been as active as I would like to be. In addition, I’ve helped beta test quite a few releases.

What are your three favourite MyBB features, and briefly, why?

– The search functionality, because although I tend to know fairly well that something was posted I can almost never find it again by simply looking for the thread in a specific forum.
– The edit button. It’s surprising to see how often I find myself using it, even though I’m also a great fan of the Preview button.
– Multiple PM recipients. Makes sending the same personal message to multiple staff members or translators just that tad bit easier.

What does your average day look like?

I always try to get up at 6 am. I wash up, quickly grab some bread and cycle to the nearest train station. The train leaves at 6.45 and after a quick transfer I arrive at university at 8.05. During the trip I often read some of the free newspapers distributed at train stations, listen to some music or podcast, skip through some math books or just enjoy the view. As there’s always something to do I rarely ever find myself bored or annoyed by the time it takes me to get to university. The day then consists mainly of studying, either on my own or by attending lectures. A bit after 5 pm I return home, where I eat, quickly turn my laptop on and deal with new emails, forum posts and so on. Then I take a shower at about 9.30 and go to bed quickly after that to get my eight hours of sleep.

Of course, in reality, I hardly ever manage to get up at six in the morning, trains are delayed, at university I get distracted by other students so don’t get much done and in the evening I go to bed way too late to get my eight hours of sleep 😛

Many weekends are spent with my girlfriend, family visits or watching Formula 1 and snooker.

What is your dream career?

I wish to become a mathematics teacher. Indeed, not very spectacular 😉

What is your favorite movie?

I can’t say I have a favorite movie. One of the more recent movies I saw was “La tourneuse de pages”, which I found a very nice one. One that also stuck was Elephant; not so much a nice movie, but certainly moving.

Tom Moore answers your questions

Tom Moore tells us everything we’ve wanted to know, and more!

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Tom and I’m from Carlisle, Cumbria, in England. And yes, it rains almost every day(!). I’m a Marketing Designer and Systems Developer and I’m in the middle of moving to a nice new house just outside of the city. I’m starting my own business soon in Xekko, providing the usual plugins and software, but also providing hospitality for local events.

How much time do you spend on the MyBB project weekly?

It depends really – usually on how much Ryan pesters me into doing something(!). I spend most of my day at work working with MyBB and if there’s a bug or two hanging around I’ll normally have a go at fixing it. My lovely girlfriend would like to point out at this time that she thinks I spend too much on the project.

Apart from MyBB, what do some of your hobbies include?

I like spending time outside and visiting the lakes (what’s the point in living in a natural park and spend all day inside?), but I like going to the cinema and enjoying the nightlife too. I’m an avid fan of Guitar Hero – I’m the drummer of our band – where having a deaf neighbor comes in handy.

What is a feature that you would like to see in MyBB one day and why?

I don’t really have a particular feature I would like to see in MyBB, to be honest – it’s already the best “forum” software you can get without all the unnecessary addons you don’t really need to run a community. Well, except for what’s planned for MyBB 2…

I work with MyBB in so many applications that I know you can do whatever you want with it.

If you could do anything you wanted for one day, what would it be?

Hmm, a day without coding would be good! There’s too many things for one day though; I would probably have to live the life of a celebrity (famous one), and go out for a night out I think. Can’t really complain at getting free drinks all night…

What made you want to join the MyBB staff?

I started using MyBB for an open-sourced alternative to Invision. I had enough free time to help out other people and I quickly grasped (almost) all aspects of MyBB. I guess I just wanted to help people out as much as I could, and then the opportunity came to join the team. Now as a developer, I really enjoy giving people headaches with the bugs I cause. Shy

Tell us a bit about your job

I really love my job; for the past two years, I’ve been a Marketing Designer and Systems Developer for one of the UK’s largest suppliers of civil engineering and drainage products (basically, they sell the sort of things to build roads and houses or public/industrial buildings, and drainage systems for things like football stadiums, car parks etc). I mainly do all of their advertising, literature and posters as my marketing part, but the other part of my job is to develop software systems to help the company. The part I hate the most is the printing out. I enjoy designing all of the leaflets and things, but really, really hate printing anywhere up to 5,000 of them – then putting them all into envelopes and stamping them. I also look after their website (which I hate, as I didn’t make it!) and I’ve just finished making an e-shop for all the products we sell. Of course, it’s powered by MyBB. Tongue

What is your dream career?

In school, I did graphic design and always wanted to be a designer. So actually, I’m already in my dream career. A Ferrari or two wouldn’t go a miss though…

Your most memorable day was…

I’ve had a few that come to mind, but I’ll have to say my first day at work (where I work now). Before then, I was unemployed and getting into things I really shouldn’t have done. It started a whole new chain of events which turned my life round for the better, and without that happening, I really don’t know where I would be now. I met people that have truly changed my life, and I even met my girlfriend there too. So (so far), that’s my memorable day.

Anything else you would like to add?

For those wanting to get into MyBB, don’t underestimate it’s ability to do whatever you want with it. It’s structure and plugin system is the most powerful and easiest to learn out of all the free forum systems (and the paid ones too, come to mind). Take some time to learn it, and you’ll find out just how much you can do with it.

Also, MyBB 2.0 will kick ass.
